I have the same severe performance degradation and explorer hanging with both Beta2 and RC1.

I am using 64 bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 with a Thinkpad T61p laptop (Intel Core2 Duo, T7700).

Gustavo,

I am very much encouraged by your report, for until now, I was the only Vista 64-bit beta tester with explorer hangs.  Now, with your symptom data added to mine, I expect the problem will be much easier to discover.

Can you tell us if you are running Taskinfo from iarsn.com or if you run any other application with an animated taskbar tray icon?

In any case, let me anticipate Alexey and ask you to run a Belarc Advisor report and e-mail it to him at at support@actualtools.com

If you don't have Belarc Advisor, click here to download it.

Regards,
Jeff

I let AWM RC1 run for about 36 hours.   My system got increasingly slow - e.g. firefox taking a long time to load pages which are normally instantaneous.

So I have had to reboot without AWM

Gentlemen,

OK, thank for your time and patience! Your assistance is invaluable for us so it would be nice to help us track down those truly major issues.

Here is another list of questions we'd like to clarify about your systems and situation:

1. What version of AWM (including betas) began to trouble your system?

2. What amount of RAM do you have? (Jeffrey, Martyn, it's not for you :) ).

3. What video adapter (or adapters) do you have?

4. What security software do you run? Did you try to suspend this software for a while to see if it removes the troubles?

Another favor I'd like to ask is the step-by-step test of different AWM 5.2 RC 1 parts of functionality. Here is the general instruction on how to do this:

1. Boot you system without AWM service running in the system tray.

2. Open the Configuration window.

3. Disable there all major functional blocks:

4. Save all changes and run AWM (yes, with ALL functions disabled!). If you encounter any problems at this stage then it means that the most core AWM functions work badly on your system, because of the low-level conflict with some drivers or any other system services.

5. If bare AWM runs normally for some time then stop it and begin to check each block individually: enable e.g. Default Settings, run AWM for a while, then (if everything's OK) stop AWM, disable Default Settings, enable e.g. Multi-monitor Taskbar, and so on. If you encounter any problems with certain component enabled please report about it here.

Alex

I started AWM as you requested and turned off all the options.

Here is what I saw initially.

1.  The task bar entries for windows on the 2nd and 3rd monitors went to the monitor task bar when I started AWM.  When I disabled the multi monitor support the task bar entries did not come back to the main monitor.

2. When I clicked on the taskbar I got a windows Unresponsive program message box.  I clicked cancel, then explorer restarted and the task bar came back on the main monitor with all the entries for windows on all 3 monitors

Alex,

Here are the answers to your questions:

Q1. What version of AWM (including betas) began to trouble your system?
A1. 4.5, as I recall

Q2. What amount of RAM do you have? (Jeffrey, Martyn, it's not for you Smile ).
A2. 4Gb, despite my exemption.

Q3. What video adapter (or adapters) do you have?
A3. NVIDIA Quadro FX550.

Q4. What security software do you run? Did you try to suspend this software for a while to see if it removes the troubles?
A4. NOD32 by ESET, V3.0.672.0.  And, yes, I did try to suspend NOD32 but it had no effect upon the problem.

I'll do the step-by-step test later and report back.

Regards,
Jeff

Alex,

AWM has been running for about 6 hours with no problems, no degradation.

I have just turner on Multi Monitor task bars - every other option still off - and I'll try that for a while.

Alex,

I disabled all of the options specified and started Actual Window Tools with the same result, sorry to say.  I touched the power button, Actual Window Tools was terminated, I was prompted for shutdown, I canceled same and my system appears stable again.

Regards,
Jeff
