OK. This is where it gets really weird.
After the crash that we are all suffering from, I closed the version of AMM running in the System Tray.
Then my taskbars, that are normally mirrored across all five screens vanished, and whenever I clicked on a document folder or file in Windows Explorer, the objects' PROPERTIES dialog box was presented. Right-clicking and selecting "Open" was the only way to open or run the object.
Opening Windows Task Manager showed that there were two copies of AMM still running - "Actual Windows Manager" and "Actual Windows Manager (32 bit)"
Killing these processes restored Windows Double-Click functionality, but did not restore the missing taskbars.
After restarting AWM, all was well until I tried "Alt+Tab" again.
Then, the BigCrash -

I'm also in contact with tech support via email. They are looking at my AppData folder as well. I'm very pleased with their responsiveness on this issue.

Susan, thankfully I know for sure there is no program compatibility issue. I coincidentally installed a fresh Windows 8 setup like a day before I noticed this issue. I had literally no programs on the computer when I started having the issue.

Hopefully our AppData folders and log files reveal something.

You guys might wanna try Display Fusion (www.displayfusion.com), I'm on a trial with them as a replacement, and seems good so far

Are the devs still saying this is not reproducible?

It's occurring continuously for me since upgrading (yesterday)to 8.1 Pro (with Media Center) on my x64, Intel Core i7-3930K machine. Very annoying/frustrating, to the point of rendering AWM useless.

I'm running AWM 8.1 Beta 1 . After the most recent error, an AWM message window asked if i wanted to send the error info to Actual Tools. I said yes, so you should have it.

In terms of running programs, I have Nvidia, Firefox, and Dropbox in common with Susan. Nvidia would be the likely suspect if a conflict exists - I had to update the driver to most recent Nvidia release (331.58) for my video card (GeForce GTX 680) for Windows 8.1 update.

So far I can reproduce this same issue on my desktop (where I initially discovered the problem), and now on my laptop (which also runs Windows 8.1 Pro).

To reiterate my experience so far: I really don't think it's an incompatibility with any software. I just think AWM is doing something that modifies how alt+tab works and isn't coded to work properly with Windows 8.1 yet. Something is not right.
