I'm sure this is an easy one, but I'm running windows 8 and all the bottom left corners activate the start screen, so the start button on the extra task bars is redundant, can it be hidden / disabled?

Hello Anthony
Sure, the start button can be disabled here: taskbar context menu > the Show the Start Button item.
