Hello Jeremy.

There are some nvidia processes in that list. Do you have some nvidia applications running? Maybe nvidia desktop manager?

Could you try to disable nvidia applications?

Have you tried to disable Fences?

Best regards.

Hi Bogdan - the only significant nvidia processes that are running are driver-related and owned by the SYSTEM (which I think any Windows system with a current nvidia card would likely have).  See the task manager screenshot I took: http://snag.gy/SCEbS.jpg

Notice the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service & the User Experience Driver Component processes.  I'm not running any NVIDIA desktop management.  I missed one other process in the screenshot above, but it's related to the 3D functionality of the video card: http://www.file.net/process/nvscpapisvr.exe.html

I killed the nvtray.exe (which just provides a shortcut to the nvidia option screen), restarted AWM, and the problem was still there.  I did the same with disabling fences, and again, the problem was still there.

I just installed the newly released 7.3, and the problem still exists there as well.  I'll try installing older versions to see if I can find the release where this was introduced.  Maybe that will help you guys narrow it down.

So this bug goes all the way back to at least 6.7, I gave up doing re-installs at that point.  Here's an even older report in your forums of exactly the same bug.  http://www.actualtools.com/forum/read.php?FID=10&TID=1688&MID=7120&sphrase_id=73632#message7120

Let's not give up on this one!  What else can I help you do to diagnose this?  My Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box at work, which is running 6.7 and also has an nvidia card w/ 3D drivers installed, is not displaying this behavior.  It does not have SP1 installed, but the machine with the bug does.  That's the only difference I've found between the two machines so far.

Should I open a new thread to track this now that 7.3 is out?

Hello Jeremy.

Could you create a new user account on the PC you have problem on, install the Actual Window Manager 7.3 there and check whether the problem persists.

Best regards.

I just tried your suggestion with the recently released 7.4.  The results were confusing... I get no start orb whatsoever on the secondary taskbar on the new user's account, but clicking where it should be brings up the start menu.  The first account is now also showing the same behavior.  The "show the start button" option is enabled in both accounts.

I also tried doing a complete re-install... I uninstalled through Programs and Features, nuked the leftover folder in Program Files (x86), nuked my prefs folder in %APPDATA% for all users, and nuked all leftover registry keys related to Actual Tools.  I rebooted, then re-installed 7.4.  Same result, still no start orb whatsoever.  Starting to get frustrated  :(

Oh, one other thing.  I updated to the latest nvidia drivers on both my home machine and my work one.  The work PC continues to work fine while the home PC still has the bug.  So I think we can rule out any relation to nvidia drivers/processes.

Hello Jeremy.

Have you tried to return to the 7.3 version? Will it return the previous behavior?

Best regards.

I didn't need to try going back to 7.3, the same orb behavior as in my video came back after a few reboots.
