I noticed that I missing the Next/Previous Slide functionality for Actual Multiple Monitors. Is there any way to restore that functionality, even manually with registry entries? I use individual slideshows for my desktop backgrounds in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 64bit.

Unrelated to the problem, I know the Next/Previous Slide will change both desktops. It would be nice to allow it to work with just the desktop you click on.

Hello Donald,

Thanks for the post.

What antivirus and firewall systems do you use?

We'll consider this request.

Best regards.

It is running on a domain where the software windows firewall is disabled.

We use Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 for antimalware, which is nearly identical to the free Microsoft Security Essentials (except it runs on server OS and costs $10/device or user and can be centrally administered).

I'm not sure how firewall or antivirus would affect the desktop right-click Next Slide shell command though.

Donald, could you try to reproduce this problem with Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 turned off?

Please, inform me about your results.

Best regards.

I actually have run it at home with the same OS and FEP2010 and it works fine.

It couldn't possibly have anything to do with a firewall. Does the Next Slide functionality talk to the software through a port or TCP/UDP connection?

Actual Multiple Monitors works fine with FEP2010 and the same OS on a different PC. FEP2010 is not the issue. If it was blocking an exe it would popup a real-time protection message as soon as it was installed. I reinstalled it twice, once using Run as Administrator after updating my video drivers just to be safe.

At any rate I'm not turning off antimalware for this product. I would have to uninstall it. There are too many web based trojans and fake antimalware browser attacks lately. I see one every other week just browsing hotmail. It would be a pointless waste of time, just like typing all of these messages to get real help.

I am a developer and network administrator. The problems is likely some permissions issue with the installer not being able to add the registry entries for the desktop shell extensions. If you can't tell me what they are, I'll reverse engineer the registry entries from a working PC.

Everything else about the product works fine.

Hello Donald,

Could you check whether these keys exist in your registry or not?
1. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{96703F22-7167-4098-A19A-9749F3A3C6ED}\InprocServer32
(Default) = C:\PROGRA~2\ACA306~1\ACTUAL~2.DLL
2. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\Actual Multiple Monitors
(Default) = {96703F22-7167-4098-A19A-9749F3A3C6ED}
3. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{96703F22-7167-4098-A19A-9749F3A3C6ED}\InprocServer32
(Default) = C:\PROGRA~2\ACA306~1\ACTUAL~1.DLL

And could you run process explorer and check whether the explorer.exe has C:\PROGRA~2\ACA306~1\ACTUAL~2.DLL (with the "Actual Multiple Monitors Shell Extension Library" description) or not?

Best regards.

The three registry keys are present although #2 is under ...shellex\ContectMenuHandlers\Actual Multiple Monitors

ACTUAL~2.DLL is not listed under DLLs in the lower pane of Process Explorer under Explorer.exe in either my working or non-working system.

There is ammemb64.dll loaded under Explorer.exe from a temp folder in both systems however. Its description is "Actual Mulitple Monitors" version 3.2.0.0.

If you added a command line parameter to one of your exe's or made a new exe to trigger the next slide it would be easy to add it to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\

Thank you for the correction! We've really missed ContectMenuHandlers subkey in the previous post.
I'm sorry for that.

Could you please right-click on the Desktop first (to make the Desktop popup menu appear), and then re-check the DLL list for Explorer.exe in Process Explorer?

We've decided to use an addiional DLL instead, because this would allow to add more functions, than via command line params, and to make them a bit more user-friendly.

Anyway, we've just checked FEP 2010 on our test computer, and it really does not block our DLL.

On the PC where the Next Slide item is missing, have you installed Actual Multiple Monitors with the support of system tools enabled?
I.e. does AMM add its functions to Regedit, MMC and other tools which are started as admin?
If it does, could you please try to re-install AMM, disable the system tools support in the installer, and then check if the Next Slide would appear?

Thanks for your patience!
