I understand it's difficult being patient with this. Once you get used to using AWM, it's hard to do without it.

While waiting, I decided to try finding a workaround. I installed VistaSwitcher. It doesn't list Windows 8(.1) compatibility, but it seems to work fine on my system. I had to add a few exclusions for the Explorer Search pane and a couple apps (the Store and Maps), but other than that, no problems.

And, importantly, it gets along with AWM 8.0.3.

Long ago, I used an earlier version of the same freeware, TaskSwitchXP, and loved it. I might keep VistaSwitcher installed even after they fix AWM. I find it much better than the standard Alt+Tab.

Ignore that post... After making it, I found VistaSwitcher interfering (in the most maddening way imaginable) with my mouse operation.

There are other Alt+Tab replacements available, but it's late and I'm tired. At least it's an idea to perhaps get us through the waiting.

Yeah, thanks for the attempted temporary solution though Scott.

Can we please get an honest update from the devs? Is this a difficult thing to isolate and code or what? I really don't care what news I receive from Actual Tools, I just would appreciate being in the loop.

OK so we're basically in a 2-way chat. Anyway, I'm 2 glasses of wine into my evening but I just found Switcher which may be worth trying. I'm going to try it, because I'm sick of not using AWM, and at this point I assume it's a dead project.

Oh, they're busy.

Guess what, I work all day, deal with everything else in life, and then come here and do this. I'm sure you do too.

Whatever.

Gentlemen,

The issue with Switcher in Windows 8.1 seems to be fixed in the just released beta 2. Please could you check it out and confirm the fix? Thanks!

I can confirm this issue is resolved. Great work. Thanks for hearing us. We enjoy your product a lot.

Edit: Well, sort of. I don't get the error anymore, but it is opening up random apps that I don't even have open.

Justin, thank you for your reply. Please could you provide some more information on the "opening random apps" issue? Thanks!

Sure Alex. Here is a video I recorded of the incident occurring.

Window 8.1 64bit AWM 8.1 beta 2

Alt Tab working fine for me now, no errors thrown up.

Justin, I have looked at your and no matter how many times I try, I cannot reproduce the strange behaviour on my system.

Alt-Tab is fixed here too. The frequent crash I used to have when exiting AWM 8.0.3 seems to be fixed as well, maybe accidentally.

Thank you, Alex.

Edit:

Actually I've noticed two anomalies. First, the first Alt+Tab keypress is half eaten. It opens the Alt+Tab display, but doesn't advance the selection. It keeps the current window selected. So, to move to the next window, I can't just hit Alt+Tab. Instead, I have to press Alt+Tab, keep Alt pressed, then hit Tab a second time. This renders the mapping of Alt+Tab to my side mouse button useless.

Second, the stupid Windows Store [cr]app frequently appears in the Alt+Tab chain. So when I least expect it, I accidentally Alt+Tab not into a recent app, but into the stupid Windows Store app.

I acknowledge these problems are probably Microsoft's fault. I regret installing 8.1. No benefits (to me), and lots of added aggravations.

It sounds like Scott is having the same problem as me.
